Tendons are the flexible bands that connect the bones to the muscles, however, sometimes tendons can become inflamed or irritated.
This condition is called Tendonitis. While tendonitis can affect everyone, regardless of age, tendonitis is more common in adults – especially when constant physical activity is involved.
Causes of Tendonitis
Tendonitis is most often caused by overuse of that tendon, for example, people who often lift heavy weights or equipment put their body at risk for tendonitis. Some other activities that could put you at risk for tendonitis include gardening, tennis, golf, or skiing. However, tendonitis can also be caused by some of these conditions and activities:
Incorrect Posture
Having incorrect posture can put you at risk for tendonitis, since often this condition won’t allow for all your muscles to be supported properly.
Overuse
Sometimes tendonitis can be caused by doing too much too soon. For example, those who do relatively low activity during the week, may develop tendonitis from having an active weekend, as the body isn’t used to the level of activity.
Arthritis and Other Conditions…
Arthritis and other diseases that affect the joints, such as psoriasis, can cause tendonitis due to the irritation and inflammation caused by these conditions.
Symptoms of Tendonitis
The biggest symptoms of tendonitis is pain and swelling around the tendon site.
How to Treat Tendonitis?
Mild tendonitis can be treated by resting the affected area. Utilizing ice or any other cold compress may reduce swelling in the area and decrease the effect of the symptoms. If ice is not enough, taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication may help. Tendonitis usually resolves itself within a week.
