Your body is not a machine which, after repair or replacement, can simply start up and run again. Although there is no standard or specific rule-set following a hernia repair, there are plenty of practical things you can do to ensure you heal as timely and as ideally as possible.
Listen to your doctor
Put aside your pride and listen to your surgeon. Your doctor has experience and knowledge which can help you heal faster and better. Do not assume that you can figure out your recovery on your own, or that you can overlook their directions. There is a reason for each recommendation, so do not take them lightly.
Make sure to ask your questions both before and after the surgery, such as when and which medications to take, and how to protect the incision site. You need to fully understand each of the doctor’s orders, even if it takes extra time go through all of them. Take notes, so you don’t forget later.
Additionally, make sure you have the contact number for the doctor’s office and for any emergency line that is necessary, so you can reach them promptly. Ask what signs should concern you, and when to skip a call to the doctor and go straight to a hospital.
Take time to Rest
Initially, you will likely have a list of restricted activities. However, most patients can return to their normal activities within a two to four-week time-period, depending on the severity of the repair, any unforeseen complications, and the discretion of the physician. Remember: your body needs rest to heal, so take it easy.
Additionally, you should expect some tenderness. Most pain is normal, and will eventually go away, but do not hesitate to call your doctor with any concerns. You may also need to wear a supportive wrap, which will protect and aid in the healing process by reducing muscle pressure and strain.
Finally, make sure you are especially careful during any activities that might increase pressure, such as using the restroom, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or lifting heavy objects. Let your doctor know if your pain is severe, to be sure infection is not developing.
